Past of be

No módulo 1 (tópico 1.4), nós estudamos sobre o verbo to be no presente. Neste texto, vamos estudar sobre esse verbo tão importante no passado.

O significado desse verbo é ser ou estar, e no passado, podemos traduzir como era ou estava. Lembrando que é preciso conjugar certinho de acordo com cada sujeito.

O verb to be possui uma estrutura irregular e sua conjugação no passado tem duas formas: was ou were.

  • I was at home yesterday. (Eu estava em casa ontem)
  • She was a good neighbor. (Ela era uma boa vizinha)
  • We were playing together. (Nós estávamos jogando juntos)
  • They were very happy. (Eles estavam muito felizes)

Affirmative form

Negative form

Forma negativaExemplos
I was notI was not here. (Eu não estava aqui)

He was notHe was not at home. (Ele não estava em casa)
She was notShe was not in California. (Ela não estava na California)
It was notIt was not a perfect weather. (Não estava um clima perfeito)
We were notWe were not very busy last month. (Nós não estávamos muito ocupados no mês passado)
They were notThey were not in a meeting. (Eles não estavam em uma reunião)

As formas contraídas na forma negativa são bastante usadas:

  • was not = wasn’t

I was not very happy -> I wasn’t very happy.

  • were not = weren’t

They were not at home -> They weren’t at home.

Interrogative form

A estrutura fica invertida na forma interrogativa. Se usarmos os wh questions (what, where, when, who, which, how…), eles vão iniciar a pergunta:

There was/were

A expressão there is e there are significa que há ou tem (no sentido de existir) e é usada no presente. Essa expressão também pode ser usada no passado e com o mesmo significado. There was é usada no singular e There were no plural.

  • There was a pencil on the table. (Tinha/Havia um lápis em cima da mesa)
  • There was an elephant in the zoo. (Tinha/Havia um elefante no zoológico)
  • There wasn’t anyone at the door. (Não tinha/Não havia ninguém na porta)
  • There were four people outside. (Tinha/Havia quatro pessoas lá fora)
  • There were books on the table. (Tinha/Havia livros em cima da mesa)
  • There weren’t good movies to watch. (Não tinha bons filmes para assistir)
